Next Shed is the venture arm of the Eberspächer Group. With this challenge, we are looking for innovative teams and companies working on sustainable and profitable fuell cell solutions and systems, such as

- Next generation hardware components for fuel cell systems
- Simulation of components of fuel cell systems
- Functional modeling of components/ systems
- Testing and management of the associated test data

Any business model is welcome! Your offer can be a product around system design or an improved way of managing Big Data related to fuel cell systems. However, your hardware, software or service should already have first paying clients.

With this Challenge we are searching for founder teams as well as established start-ups and companies.

  • What are the criteria to qualify for the challenge?

    You must be a team of at least 2 people. Your product or solution is already a prototype that you are about to test. Ideally, you already have first users or sold to paying clients. With this challenge, we are looking for innovative business models around fuel cell systems such as - Hardware components for the fuel cell system - Simulation of components of fuel cell systems - Functional modeling of components/ systems - Testing and management of the associated test data Make sure to articulate clearly your next step and why Next Shed is a good fit to support you with that.

  • Who can apply?

    With this Challenge we are searching for founder teams as well as established start-ups and companies. You should be a team of at least 2 members. In this round, we are focusing on business models around fuel cell systems. If this is not for you, please follow us on LinkedIn. We conduct challenges two-three times a year, so maybe your topic is next rounds theme?

  • What makes an application successful?

    First of all: You as a team or company! It is important that you have strong people on the team reflecting the skill set needed to make a business model successful. Secondly, check: Do you bring the necessary competences and motivation? Does your pitch convince with a clear proposal on what you are searching for and do you express clearly why Next Shed by Eberspächer is a good fit? Do you solve a clear and relevant problem with a concrete solution? Showcase the market potential and scalability of your business model.

  • How long is the challenge?

    The application for the challenge starts May 26 and ends on June 20, 2021. After a week, we will notify you whether your submission has qualified for the next round. You will then have time until July 4, to prepare your pitch for the Innovation Council, who will decide on which business models will proceed to the next stage, get further funding, equipment, an investment etc.

  • What does the pitch deck for the application need to look like?

    You can add an introduction video or a pitch deck to your application. In general, we recommend you to cover: Your motivation and competences, description of your product and business model, target group and potential market size. Which next steps do you want to achieve and how can Eberspächer support you?

  • What is the Innovation Council?

    The Innovation Council consists of our board members Martin Peters, Dr. Thomas Waldhier and Dr. Jörg Schernikau, our head of Corporate Strategy & Development Ulrike Wörz. In addition, we will nominate two additional guests depending on the topics that will be presented. They are experienced managers who are eager to invest in promising business models and supporting them to be successful.

  • What stage do we need to be for the challenge?

    With this challenge we address founders as well as start-ups and established companies. At least you should have a clear idea of your business model plus prototype that you are testing and that you have already a first paying client for. This challenge is not for you if you are in the ideation phase right now and still exploring possible solutions.

  • When do I know if my product or solution has passed the qualification?

    After the submission, the team at Next Shed will evaluate every application and select up to 10 business models. Last year, about 40% of the applications have qualified and were entered into the pitch phase.

  • Is the pitch in person or online?

    We are generally holding the pitch with the Innovation Council at our headquarter of Eberspächer Group in Esslingen. However, last time we organized a virtual event due to the current situation. We will inform the qualified teams in time.

  • Where do I get all the information I need for the challenge?

    Our team at Next Shed will personally be in touch with you and help you with both technical or business advice and support. In addition, please follow us on LinkedIn to get all the updates around the challenge.
